Sergiy Stakhovsky - the man who tamed Roger Federer

Image
London:  Sergiy Stakhovsky, the man who hails from Kiev in Ukraine and is ranked outside the world's top 100, wiped the smile off Roger Federer's face on Wednesday after evicting the Swiss from his own backyard at Wimbledon. Since winning the first of his record 17 grand slam titles on the Centre Court here in 2003, no one had managed to eject the grasscourt master before the quarter-finals. On Wednesday, the world finally met a man who did. Sergiy Stakhovsky is the  116th ranked tennis player  in the world. Today he defeated Roger Federer at Wimbledon in the second round. You would assume that is the greatest thing he has ever done, but you would be wrong because two years ago, the 27-year old Ukranian married Anfisa Stakhovsky (formerly Anfisa Bulgakova. Or “ Anfissa Bulgakova .”). She happens to be a 5-foot-10 Russian model. In addition to being tall and pretty, Anfisa holds a Masters degree in Strategic Marketing. Stakhovsky, 27, turned professional in 200...

Ukrainian Catholics, Orthodox move to mend ties

Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, the leader of the Eastern-rite Ukrainian Catholic Church, has issued an invitation to the country’s most prominent Orthodox leader to attend services for the opening of a new Catholic cathedral in Kiev. The Orthodox Metropolitan Vladimir expressed thanks for the invitation and “wished God’s blessings” on the cathedral, the Ukrainian Catholic Church reports. The invitation to the Orthodox prelate, and his friendly reply, could mark a thaw in the often tense relations between the Catholic and Orthodox churches in Ukraine. The Russian Orthodox Church had strongly objected to the plans to move the headquarters of the Ukrainian Catholic Church from Lviv to Kiev. But Metropolitan Vladimir—whose Ukrainian Orthodox Church- Moscow Patriarchate is allied with the Russian Church—seemed ready to accept the development. In conversations with Catholic prelates last week—during a visit to Ukraine by Cardinal Kurt Koch, the president of the Pontifical Counci...

UK, 'This hooker's ugly': 999 caller phoned police to complain about a prostitute's looks after meeting her.

A man has received a warning from police after calling 999 to complain that a prostitute he met outside a hotel was not as attractive as she had promised. The nuisance caller claimed that the woman had 'breached the Sale of Goods Act' by mis-representing her looks in a newspaper advert. However, officers in Solihull told him that the prostitute had not committed an offence - and reminded him that he may have broken the law against soliciting for sex. West Midlands Police have now tracked the man down and sent him a letter warning him about wasting police time with frivolous complaints. A spokesman for the service said: 'A 999 call was received by police at around 7.30pm on Tuesday evening from a man wishing to complain about a sex worker he had met on a hotel car park. 'The caller claimed that the woman had made out she was better looking than she actually was, and he wished to report her for breaching the Sale of Goods Act. 'When he raised this is...

Dieumerci Mbokani target set for Dynamo

Image
West Brom and Hull City look set to miss out on Anderlecht striker Dieumerci Mbokani, who is set for a medical at Dynamo Kiev. The DR Congo striker is ready to travel to the Ukraine to finalise the move on a three-year contract even though Anderlecht have not confirmed whether they have agreed a fee for him. The Belgian champions' asking price is believed to be £9million for the 27-year-old frontman, who scored 19 league goals last season. Mbokani was waiting on an EU passport application which would have opened up the door for a move to the Premier League as he would not have needed a work permit. But it looks as though his hopes of receiving the documentation have been hit, forcing him to consider Dynamo Kiev's offer which has been on the table for over a month. West Brom had been chasing Mbokani but knew that they would have been struggling to get a work permit for him if they went to the Home Office as DR Congo are currently outside the top 70 on the Fifa World Ranking...

Kiev puts up monument to Sweden Euro 2012 fans on the Trukhaniv Island.

Image
Kiev has unveiled an unusual monument paying tribute to the thousands of exuberant Swedish football fans who flooded into the city last year for the 2012 European championships hosted by Ukraine and Poland. Up to 25,000 Swedish supporters visited Kiev where their team played all of its three matches. They were the largest group of fans and generally left a favourable impression on locals, who are keen for them to return as tourists. City officials on Saturday unveiled the sculpture on the picturesque Trukhaniv Island in the Dniepr River where many Swedish fans camped out in tents. The sculpture is topped with Viking horns and depicts the number "12" in Sweden's national colours of blue and yellow. Fans are sometimes described as the "number 12" player in a team. Nevertheless some Swedish fans complained the figures also brought back bad memories of the first game of the championship when Sweden lost 1:2 to Ukraine. "I see the numbers. It i...
