For Euro 2012, Germany Has Impressive Depth

Image
Soccer, like most sports, is a team game which, in the vaguest definition, revolves around 11 players who must work together in a series of carved out positions and tactics to enable the most efficient means of obtaining and exploiting a small leather ball to allow them to win a game. However, as the sport has grown in size, strength and speed over the past 20 years, the modern game no longer allows the primitive notion of a single 11 players exclusively holding the right to dictate the manner in which their side either succeeds or fails. Such a concept manifests itself most evidently through cup competitions in which a single squad group of players are constantly hit with injuries, form and the ever-changing face, size and tactics of their next opponent. For a side like Germany – one of the favorites for the European Championships – most consider their strength in midfield or their continental goalscorers as the key to their prominence, but few consider the advantage they h

Euro 2012 breakdown

Group A: Czech Republic, Poland, Greece, Russia Russia While Andrey Arshavin is the known star of the squad, Russia has a brilliant goalie in Igor Akinfeev, a pacy winger in ex-Chelsea man, Zhirkov, and great forwards in Spurs striker Roman Pavlyuchenko and Fulham striker Pavel Pogrebnyak. I believe Russia will qualify for the next round, but do they really have the belief that they can win this tournament? I don't think so. Euro 2008 was their best shot at international honors and this group's "win tournament" tag has expired. Russia is clever with their movement in the final third but they just don't have that extra magic that Spain has to compensate for their lack of true team speed. I predict a quarterfinal berth at best for Russia as they have to play the runner up from Group B in the next round, which will likely be Portugal or the Netherlands. Key player: Andrey Arshavin. Breakout star: Alan Dzagoev. Poland Poland counts on Robert Lewandowski

12 Potential Stars for Euro 2012

A glance at the odds provided by European bookmakers for who will be named player of the tournament at Euro 2012 offers something of an insight into who fans are likely to be lauding when the event ends in Kiev on July 1. Cristiano Ronaldo, Franck Ribéry, Mesut Özil, Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Xavi. They are  the elite of the elite , and they’re all listed. But there are other players who could use the tournament’s platform to launch themselves directly into the attentions of the soccer fraternity and to prove their value alongside that European elite. Here are 12 to keep an eye on: JAKUB BLASZCZYKOWSKI (Poland) Talent often arrives in clusters. It’s a belief supported by the success achieved by Spain over the past five years and by the famous French triumphs of 1998 and 2000. Although not to the same all-conquering level, Poland may be the latest to adopt this theory, with the co-hosts’ boasting a new wave of talent that includes the Borussia Dortmund teammates Robert L

Five managers to watch at Euro 2012

Joachim Low – Germany The German coach has been given assurances about his job, no matter what happens at Euro 2012, but knowing the way 'Jogi' works, he will be focused solely on the title. This is, after all, the man who gambled at the 2010 World Cup by opting for youth over experience – by picking Germany's youngest squad ever, Low took the team to the semi-finals. His decision to drop Michael Ballack for the World Cup was controversial, but Low's decision to let youth blossom under his guidance was vindicated. Low, who has been in charge of Germany since Jurgen Klinsmann stepped down after the 2006 World Cup, has been credited with transforming Germany into an attacking football team. Key to this change was introducing a more flamboyant and aggressive style of play, a shift from the traditional way past German teams operated. With Low at the helm, the  Mannschaft  thrilled in Euro 2008 and at the last World Cup, and heading into Euro 2012 Low's squad has

Dangers & Annoyances in Kiev.

Crime In general, Kiev is as safe as most Western European countries. Organized crime does exist, but unless you’re coming to Kiev to open a chain of casinos the mafias are extremely unlikely to take an interest in you. Crimes perpetrated against visitors are generally low level and include pick pocketing and wallet scams. Acts of mindless drunken violence such as those which commonly occur in British cities are rare. There are, however, increasing reports of racist attacks on those of African and Middle Eastern appearance. Although the police in Kiev are no angels, they don’t, unlike their counterparts in Moscow, routinely pester foreigners for documents and bribes. Other Dangers & Annoyances During the winter, many of Kiev’s streets and sidewalks resemble ice rinks. Prostitution, although often discreet, is common in hotel lobbies and bars. Ukraine has one of the fastest growing HIV/AIDS rates in Europe. The World Heath Organization estimates that there are 377,0

Euro 2012 refs to stop games if any racial abuse.

Image
WARSAW, Poland (AP) -UEFA president Michel Platini promised that referees will stop European Championship matches if players suffer abuse from fans, as questions on racism in Poland and Ukraine dominated a news conference Wednesday to launch the tournament. Platini said UEFA has empowered referees to "temporarily stop the game and finally cancel the game if this racism keeps rearing its head.'' Concern was fueled by a British television program last week showing discrimination and violent incidents at recent club matches in the co-host nations. Ahead of the Euro 2012 kick off on Friday, the head of a Europe-wide campaign against discrimination in football acknowledged it posed more potential problems than previous tournaments. "There is no question we are worried about this tournament more than any other,'' Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) director Piara Powar told reporters on the sidelines of Platini's meeting. UEFA invited the FAR

Here is our WAG best XI for Euro 2012, compiled through arduous and painstaking research (tough job). The criteria? Had to fill out an actual eleven based on the husbands/boyfriends. The husbands/boyfriends had to be on a roster for Euro 2012. Had to be, at least according to a cursory google search, still dating or married. Cheryl Cole, sadly, no longer would qualify. GK: Sara Carbonero – Spain [Iker Casillas] The soon to be Mrs. Casillas is a television presenter for Telecinco in Spain. She shared a famous kiss with him while in South Africa covering the World Cup. She was once named the sexiest sports reporter in the world (Tim Ryan still thinks he got robbed). D: Lara Alvarez – Spain [Sergio Ramos] Another Real Madrid and Spain star. Another gorgeous Spanish TV reporter. The entire Spain team could be Vanderbilt assistants .
