Ukraine resumes shipping by the river of Pripyat

Ukraine resumes shipping to the Pripyat

Belarus has signed an investment contract for the construction of a river port near the border with Ukraine in the framework of the reconstruction of the waterway from the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea. Poland, Belarus and Ukraine will take part in the project, which will conduct dredging on the Dnieper and Pripyat rivers and resume navigation in the Pripyat.
It is reported  with reference to Ukraine News. As explained by the former Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, and now Advisor to the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Viktor Dovgan, the first stage of construction of the port in Nizhny Zhary of the Gomel region will begin simultaneously with the deepening of the Dnieper by the Ukrainian side

The first stage of construction of the port in Nizhny Zhary will begin simultaneously with our dredging of the Dnieper to 2.65 m, cost of works is 80 million UAH. Plus, the adoption of the law on inland waterway transport and the return of our investment in dredging due to transshipment in the port of Kherson, - said Dovgan.

According to preliminary estimates, the project will result in an increase in the transit flow of Ukraine by 6-7 million tons of cargo (fertilizers, timber and petroleum products) over 3 years.

The route connecting the Baltic and the Black Sea is called the E-40. Today, this route is only partially navigable. The revival of the route will revive trade between Poland, Belarus and Ukraine, as one barge for 900 tonnes replaces 18 cars or 45 trucks for 20 tonnes.

The E-40 project envisages the creation of a river route from the Baltic to the Black Sea through the Vistula, Western Bug, Pripyat and Dnipro rivers. Its length will be more than 2 thousand km. It is planned to carry 12 million tons of cargo per year on the restored E-40 route. Ukraine plans to ship its products along the river to Belarus and then to the European Union. Belarus intends to transport oil, timber, construction materials, ferrous metallurgy and potash fertilizers to the Dnieper river ports of Ukraine, and then ship them to the Black Sea countries by river-sea ships.
