Henkel pulls toilet freshener after Ukraine takes offence

Image
German consumer goods company Henkel has pulled a toilet freshener from the eastern European market after Ukrainians complained it looked like the former Soviet republic's flag. A television advertisement for the Bref Duo Stick freshener run in Russia ( here ) caught the attention of Ukrainians - many of whom watch Russian television - last week. In the ad, the yellow-and-blue freshener which is shaped like a small flag is put under the toilet rim. "A delirious idea from uncultured people," one person commented on the YouTube clip. Tore Birol, Henkel's general manager for laundry and home care products in Ukraine, told Reuters on Wednesday the company had pulled the product within three days of seeing the complaints. "We are very sorry if people were offended by the design of our new product," he said. "We stopped the production, distribution and television advertising (of the product)." Birol said the freshener, which had been mark

Ukrainian Femen Member Becomes French National Symbol

Image
Inna Shevchenko, the same girl who was recently granted political asylum in France for felling a 13-foot high Christian cross in Kyiv, is the most recent hero among the French, appearing as she does on their newest national postage stamp as a symbol of the French Revolution. Each new President of France chooses a stamp with the new Marianna, the bare-breasted heroine of the French Revolution, on the Day of Revolution. This year, out of 15 final works, Francois Hollande opted on the version that most resembled Femen’s Inna Shevchenko. The student artist who created the work admits Inna was his inspiration for the stamp, embodying as she does the values of the French Revolution – freedom, equality, and fraternity. Shevchenko seemed honoured at being the newest face on France’s official stamp for the next five years, saying, “Now all homophobes, extremists, fascists will have to lick my ass when they want to send a letter.” Ah yes, classy.

Party in Kiev

Image
In the last decade Ukraine’s capital Kiev has grown into a European entertainment hub, attracting some of the world’s most famous musicians and DJs. For example, Joachim Garraud, who is one of the brightest stars in the French DJ scene, has been a regular visitor to the nightclub Dali Park since 2004. In Ukraine people are more likely to spend money on leisure. It also has less restrictive alcohol and tobacco advertising, which means clubs get more financial sponsorship. Club manager, Fabrice Schwarz explained how that benefits the venues there: “We have exactly the same DJs as in Europe, who play in the most important clubs. From that point of view Ukraine is ahead of the game. They can get artists who play in France and are very difficult to hire because of their high fees”. In Kiev’s Arena Entertainment Centre, night club Decadence has opened its party season on a summer terrace. It is one of the most popular nightlife attractions among foreign visitor

London:  Sergiy Stakhovsky, the man who hails from Kiev in Ukraine and is ranked outside the world's top 100, wiped the smile off Roger Federer's face on Wednesday after evicting the Swiss from his own backyard at Wimbledon. Since winning the first of his record 17 grand slam titles on the Centre Court here in 2003, no one had managed to eject the grasscourt master before the quarter-finals. On Wednesday, the world finally met a man who did. Sergiy Stakhovsky is the  116th ranked tennis player  in the world. Today he defeated Roger Federer at Wimbledon in the second round. You would assume that is the greatest thing he has ever done, but you would be wrong because two years ago, the 27-year old Ukranian married Anfisa Stakhovsky (formerly Anfisa Bulgakova. Or “ Anfissa Bulgakova .”). She happens to be a 5-foot-10 Russian model. In addition to being tall and pretty, Anfisa holds a Masters degree in Strategic Marketing. Ukrainian Catholics, Orthodox move to mend ties

Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, the leader of the Eastern-rite Ukrainian Catholic Church, has issued an invitation to the country’s most prominent Orthodox leader to attend services for the opening of a new Catholic cathedral in Kiev. The Orthodox Metropolitan Vladimir expressed thanks for the invitation and “wished God’s blessings” on the cathedral, the Ukrainian Catholic Church reports. The invitation to the Orthodox prelate, and his friendly reply, could mark a thaw in the often tense relations between the Catholic and Orthodox churches in Ukraine. The Russian Orthodox Church had strongly objected to the plans to move the headquarters of the Ukrainian Catholic Church from Lviv to Kiev. But Metropolitan Vladimir—whose Ukrainian Orthodox Church- Moscow Patriarchate is allied with the Russian Church—seemed ready to accept the development. In conversations with Catholic prelates last week—during a visit to Ukraine by Cardinal Kurt Koch, the president of the Pontifical Counci

UK, 'This hooker's ugly': 999 caller phoned police to complain about a prostitute's looks after meeting her.

A man has received a warning from police after calling 999 to complain that a prostitute he met outside a hotel was not as attractive as she had promised. The nuisance caller claimed that the woman had 'breached the Sale of Goods Act' by mis-representing her looks in a newspaper advert. However, officers in Solihull told him that the prostitute had not committed an offence - and reminded him that he may have broken the law against soliciting for sex. West Midlands Police have now tracked the man down and sent him a letter warning him about wasting police time with frivolous complaints. A spokesman for the service said: 'A 999 call was received by police at around 7.30pm on Tuesday evening from a man wishing to complain about a sex worker he had met on a hotel car park. 'The caller claimed that the woman had made out she was better looking than she actually was, and he wished to report her for breaching the Sale of Goods Act. 'When he raised this is

Dieumerci Mbokani target set for Dynamo

Image
West Brom and Hull City look set to miss out on Anderlecht striker Dieumerci Mbokani, who is set for a medical at Dynamo Kiev. The DR Congo striker is ready to travel to the Ukraine to finalise the move on a three-year contract even though Anderlecht have not confirmed whether they have agreed a fee for him. The Belgian champions' asking price is believed to be £9million for the 27-year-old frontman, who scored 19 league goals last season. Mbokani was waiting on an EU passport application which would have opened up the door for a move to the Premier League as he would not have needed a work permit. But it looks as though his hopes of receiving the documentation have been hit, forcing him to consider Dynamo Kiev's offer which has been on the table for over a month. West Brom had been chasing Mbokani but knew that they would have been struggling to get a work permit for him if they went to the Home Office as DR Congo are currently outside the top 70 on the Fifa World Ranking
