A flower with a strange name and a very unpleasant smell bloomed in the Syretsky Arboretum. But thanks to the aroma, it attracts pollinating flies, and its exoticism - many connoisseurs of rare plants.

You can see amorphophallus or "devil's tongue" in the open air in the arboretum on Syrka.

The plant blooms with an exotic and very unusual amorphophallus (Amorphophallus konjac). The plant is also called "devil's tongue", "voodoo lily", "snake palm". for pollination. It originates from tropical Asia from Japan to Indonesia. The plant has an underground tuber, the stem is spotted, the leaves appear after flowering, ”the arboretum staff explained.





In a comment to Vecherny Kyiv, it was reported that an unusual plant grows in the nursery. When it is open, everyone can marvel at the wonder of nature. It is quite easy to find the plant now - by the smell in the fenced part of the arboretum near the greenhouse. However, fans of exotics should hurry, because the "devil's tongue" blooms only a few days.

Cognac emerges from the dormant period in early spring and blooms in April. However, this year the late spring "shifted" these deadlines. During flowering, the smell of rotting flesh spreads around. Thus, the plant attracts insects that transfer pollen from male flowers to female ones located here.

Interestingly, this plant is very popular in Asia. Edible and medicinal properties have long been known. In 1846, a book about "100 recipes for cognac" was even published in Japan. It is even eaten, cooked like noodles. And according to Wikipedia, in the United States cognac is used to make jelly candies.
