In Romania the sixth ferry of the Island class according to the Nikolaev project was built
On April 21, 2021, the ferry of the Road Ferry 8117 E3 project was launched at the Damen Shipyards Galati shipyard in Romania, in the creation of which the Mykolayiv MDEM “Marine Design Engineering Mykolayiv” took part.
with reference to Nikolaev - the city of shipbuilders.
This is the last of six Island Class ferries ordered by BC Ferries for transportation in British Columbia, Canada.
Jamie Marshall, BC Ferries Vice President of Shipbuilding and Innovation, emphasizes that the main purpose of putting these vessels into operation is to ensure the environmental friendliness of transportation.
Island Class is a hybrid diesel-electric ferry that can only run on battery-powered electric motors. The shipowner plans to replace the old one that operated on the island line with two new vessels, and this should reduce costs and increase traffic, which will eventually lead to the elimination of congestion on local roads.
Interestingly, when BC Ferries held a tender to order a series of these ferries, bids came from 18 shipyards from around the world, but none of the Canadian companies applied. In the end the contract was received by the Damen company, the vessel is constructed in Romania under the project which was created in Nikolaev.
