These years have clearly shown: independence must be preserved and defended, which Ukrainians continue to do every day. The support of our friends and partners is extremely important in this struggle. It was so 35 years ago - and it is so today. On August 24, 1991, Ukraine declared independence. And within a year, it was recognized by 123 countries of the world.  The recognition of Ukraine's independence was a complex historical process, preceded by negotiations, advocacy and important diplomatic work.  🤝 The first five countries to recognize Ukraine's independence were Poland, Canada, Hungary, Lithuania and Latvia. Sister Liji (Lydia) Payyapili, SJSM, is originally from India. For the past 25 years, her ministry has been connected with Ukraine. In Transcarpathia, in the village of Pavshino (near Mukachevo), where the monastery of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph de Saint-Marc is located, the nun receives people for conversations and intercessory prayer.
