Tomorrow, Ukraine will celebrate 35 years of restoration of independence

These years have clearly shown: independence must be preserved and defended, which Ukrainians continue to do every day. The support of our friends and partners is extremely important in this struggle. It was so 35 years ago - and it is so today. On August 24, 1991, Ukraine declared independence. And within a year, it was recognized by 123 countries of the world.  The recognition of Ukraine's independence was a complex historical process, preceded by negotiations, advocacy and important diplomatic work.  🤝 The first five countries to recognize Ukraine's independence were Poland, Canada, Hungary, Lithuania and Latvia. Officially, this happened in the first days after the announcement of the results of the All-Ukrainian referendum on December 1, 1991. The history of the process of international recognition of our country can be seen today in the documents of Ukrainian diplomacy.  📃 The Diplomatic e-Archive contains, in particular, the “List of States that Recognized Ukrain...

The blue-yellow flag is our identity, a symbol of our independence, strength and freedom. The flag that unites each of us, wherever we are. May it always fly over a free, peaceful and prosperous Ukraine. Happy National Flag Day of Ukraine 🇺🇦

It turns out that there are already legends among the conductors of Ukrzaliznytsia

And here is one of them - the conductor of the 5th carriage of the Dnipro-Odesa train. They say his name is Volodymyr. Passengers write about him: "simply top". And the point is not even that the person does his job well. Volodymyr has already experienced five evacuations with his passengers in one trip. And at this moment he manages to remain the same conductor: he helps people, supports, pours out sayings, jokes and keeps the whole carriage in a normal mood. A kind of carriage psychotherapist, commandant, rescuer and stand-up comedian in one person. And you know, lately I have been thinking more and more that it is precisely such people that we are holding on to. Not on big words about invincibility. But on this very simple humanity: when everyone is scared, but someone nearby does not add to your fear, but on the contrary, takes some of it upon himself.  Perhaps this is how we will experience all this - a person next to a person. Let's keep this humanity i...

Sister Liji (Lydia) Payyapili, SJSM, is originally from India. For the past 25 years, her ministry has been connected with Ukraine. In Transcarpathia, in the village of Pavshino (near Mukachevo), where the monastery of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph de Saint-Marc is located, the nun receives people for conversations and intercessory prayer. From time to time, she also visits parishes in Ukraine and abroad, where she is invited to spend a day of prayer. In an interview for Vatican media, Sister Liji talks about this year’s trips to the frontline cities of eastern and southern Ukraine, the importance of the prayer component in defending one’s land from the enemy, and the dimension of true independence in a country where war is ongoing.
