17-year-old Roman Degtyarev is the European chess champion
The Ukrainian won 8 games, drew twice and suffered only one defeat.
Degtyarev became the first European champion in history who did not have the title of grandmaster at the time of his victory (now he is an international master).
At the start of the tournament, the Ukrainian had only the 126th rating among more than 500 participants, but he showed a phenomenal result.
His performance is 2781. In the current FIDE rating, only Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana are higher.
Congratulations on the historic achievement 🇺🇦
