The most profitable livestock product

The level of profitability of milk production in all enterprises at the end of 2019 exceeded the results of 2018 by 4.5% and amounted to 20.6%.

This is the highest indicator in 2019 for all types of livestock products - said the director of the National Scientific Center "Institute of Agrarian Economics" Academician of the National Academy of Sciences Yuri Lupenko.

According to him, in agricultural enterprises the production of milk of farm animals of all types has been consistently profitable since 2007. Moreover, last year's level of profitability is the second since 1994, and is second only to the 2017 indicator of 26.9%.

In farms, the profitability level in 2019 was slightly lower - 20.1%. However, it also exceeded the 2018 figure of 18.0%, the scientist noted.

In addition to milk, only the production of pigs for meat remained profitable in animal husbandry in 2019 - 4.7% against 6.9% in 2018.

Egg production, which had a profitability level of 5.4% in 2018, became unprofitable last year (-23.5%). The level of profitability of poultry meat production decreased from 5.7% in 2018 to (-3.7%) last year.

Also traditionally unprofitable were the production of cattle meat (-27.1%), sheep and goats (-39.7%), wool (-71.1%) and honey (-32.2%).

However, poultry meat (13.2%) and honey (28.4%) retained their profitability in farms, the scientist emphasized.

The decrease in the profitability of livestock production in agricultural enterprises is mainly due to a decrease in sales prices, which in general in 2019 amounted to 3.2%. At the same time, the chronic unprofitability of meat and wool production requires special support for their production, especially since the level of meat consumption in Ukraine is still far from rational norms, summed up Yuriy Lupenko.
