Ukrainian McDonald's completely abandons plastic beverage cups

McDonald’s in Ukraine will switch entirely to paper beverage cups, although hot drinks have so far been served in paper cups and necks, lemonades and cold drinks in plastic packaging.

Abandonment of plastic cups will reduce plastic consumption by 10 tons per month. McDonald’s beverage paper cups are made from 100% PEFC-certified pulp at the company’s plant in Ukraine.

We are pleased to have finally found a reliable partner who produces recyclable paper cups in Ukraine, and we will be able to reduce our impact on the environment by abandoning plastic packaging for beverages - said the press service of McDonald’s in Ukraine

The abandonment of plastic cups is part of McDonald’s global commitment to move to the production of all recycled packaging materials by 2025. All packaging materials from restaurants must be recycled. In addition, the company collects and recycles all food packaging in the kitchen. Every month, food waste, more than 70 tons of paper and more than 5 tons of plastic come from restaurants' kitchens for recycling.

It will be recalled that last year the company abandoned plastic lids for McFlure, which reduced waste by 27.5 tons of plastic per year. At the same time, all the oil used in restaurants is sent for processing into biofuel, wastewater from restaurants is used to water flower beds and lawns near them, and new sources of electricity are used on roofs.
