Ukraine in June increased iron exports by 78.5%

In the first half of the year, metallurgical enterprises exported 22.8% more cast iron than in January-June last year

In June 2020, Ukrainian metallurgists increased iron exports by 78.5% compared to June last year - up to 266.9 thousand tons. In monetary terms, iron exports increased by 46.9% - to $ 70.4 million.

This is evidenced by customs statistics.

Compared to May, revenue from pig iron exports in June increased by 7%. In physical terms, foreign deliveries increased by 10.2%.

In the first half of the year, Ukrainian metallurgists increased revenues from pig iron exports by 8% compared to the corresponding period of 2019 - up to $ 422.3 million.

In January-June, metallurgical enterprises exported 1.5 million tons of pig iron. This is 22.8% more than in January-June last year.

The main consumer of Ukrainian cast iron is the USA (55.99%). Compared with January-May, the share of the States in total exports of pig iron increased by 3.37 percentage points.

China's share in total exports of Ukrainian cast iron in January-June was 20.6%. In January-June 2019, Ukraine did not export pig iron to China. In third place in terms of imports - Turkey (7.72%).

This year, the Chinese market provided Ukrainian metallurgists with a good opportunity to increase iron exports. The niche was formed due to a sharp rise in prices for iron ore against the background of reduced supplies from Brazil. As a result, China began to increase imports of pig iron as a substitute for iron ore.

However, by the end of June, ore prices in China had stabilized due to declining demand for steel. And in early July, quotes began to decline amid rising supplies of raw materials. Now the producers of ZRS expect a fall in iron ore prices in the second half. Obviously, this should be followed by a fall in iron prices, which will make supplies of goods to China less economically attractive.

As reported by GMK Center, in 2019, exports of pig iron from Ukraine decreased by 23.8% compared to the previous year - up to $ 801.9 million In physical terms, deliveries of pig iron abroad decreased by 14.2% - up to 2.6 million t.

In 2019, Ukraine sold more than half of its cast iron to the United States (58%). In second place in terms of supply was Italy (12.43%), in third place - Turkey (10.27%).
