Three previously unknown copies of the Ostroh Bible from 1581 have been found on Mount Athos in Greece.

They are being studied by historian Serhiy Shumylo in the monastery’s closed book vaults.

The Ostroh Bible is the first complete edition of the Holy Scriptures in Church Slavonic and one of the most important Ukrainian books of the 16th century. About 350 of its copies are known in the world.

The entries in the books can help establish how Ukrainian ancient printed books ended up on Mount Athos and how close the ties of Ukrainians with the Holy Mountain were.
