In 2019, all countries in the world spent 1917 billion US dollars on defense. This is stated in the report of the Stockholm Institute for Peace (SIPRI).
This is the largest amount spent on defense since the study began in 1988. Last year, global defense spending was 2.2% of world GDP, or about $ 249 per capita. However, SIPRI believes that defense spending has reached its peak because the spread of coronavirus in the world will have strong economic consequences.
"We assume that the peak has been reached, as the economic downturn associated with COVID-19 will have a major impact on government budgets and all expenditures in 2020," said Nan Tian, a researcher at the SIPRI Arms and Military Expenditure Program. As an example, the researcher mentioned the decrease in defense spending after the economic crisis in 2008-2009.
Compared to 2018, global defense spending increased by 3.6%, which is the highest figure for the last decade. Most of the defense spending (62%) comes from five countries: the United States, China, India, Russia and Saudi Arabia.
The United States continues to confidently maintain world leadership in defense spending. The country accounts for 38% of world defense spending. Last year, the United States spent 5.3% more on defense than the previous year - 732 billion dollars.
In second and third place were China and India, respectively. In 2019, China's defense spending increased by 5.1% and reached, according to SIPRI, $ 261 billion. And India's spending increased 6.8% to $ 71.1 billion.
Russia rose to fourth place. In 2019, Moscow spent 4.5% more - $ 65.1 billion. But Saudi Arabia dropped from third to fifth place. In 2019, Riyadh is estimated to have spent 16 percent less on defense - about $ 62 billion.
Germany's defense spending in 2019 increased by 10% to $ 49.3 billion. So Berlin rose from ninth to seventh place in the world.
Ukraine rose from 41st to 35th place. According to SIPRI, Kyiv spent $ 5.2 billion on defense in 2019, an increase of 9.3% over the previous year.
